Un virus troppo furbo

Mentre l'Italia si chiede che fine faranno i soldi per la banda larga al sud e Tiscali punta a 800.000 utenti (in Europa) per la banda larga stessa, alcuni hackers hanno creato un virus diverso dai soliti. Si tratta infatti di un messaggio email che arriva sotto forma di messaggio di PayPal, il servizio di pagamento di eBay. Mimail.I è il suo nome (prevede che ci siano dei successori e questo è già gravissimo), e contiene questo messaggio (o sue varianti):
Soggetto: Your PayPal account expires
Dear PayPal member, PayPal would like to inform you about some important information regarding your PayPal account. This account, which is associated with the email address will be expiring within five business days. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause, but this is occurring because all of our customers are required to update their account settings with their personal information. We are taking these actions because we are implementing a new security policy on our website to insure everyone's absolute privacy. To avoid any interruption in PayPal services then you will need to run the application that we have sent with this email (see attachment) and follow the instructions. Please do not send your personal information through email, as it will not be as secure.
Al messaggio, è allegato un file, www.paypal.com.scr, che contiene il virus.
E' inutile dire che cosa fare. Ma quel che conta è spargere la voce, sebbene in Italia pochi, purtroppo, usano PayPal, perchè il danno che può fare agli ignari utenti è notevole, sebbene, come è accaduto per Zelig (il virus), sarà piuttosto facile risalire agli untori.
